HOW THE COALITION WORKS

Organizers from NELCWIT brought together more than 20 organizations in Franklin County and the North Quabbin. Our initial meetings focused on discussing how we can dismantle racism in our communities. We did research and outreach to find out what other groups in our area are doing to fight racism in order to be more effective in creating action plans that did not duplicate efforts. From there, the Coalition identified two primary areas of focus: creating welcoming communities for people of color, and accountability for racial justice. Members of the coalition then volunteered to serve on one of these two committees.

The committees each meet once a month to collect information on these areas of focus and create concrete strategic actions that fight systemic racism. The Coalition comes togethers as a wider group once a month to hear report backs from the committees, give feedback, offer insights on strategies, and vote on the proposed actions.

At our monthly Coalition meetings, we also feature presentations from groups/ organizations/ individuals that are working on their own anti-racism projects. Our goal is to learn about groups taking action against racism and possibly find ways to collaborate and support each other. We are excited to hear from groups anywhere in the country, but especially in our region of Western Massachusetts. If you are interested in giving a presentation, or you know of a group or individual who may be interested, please reach out to Juan Carlos at juancarlos@nelcwit.org. We offer small stipends to groups and individuals who present at our meetings.

The original organizers of the Coalition, all staff at NELCWIT, now serve as the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee meets twice a month to plan the Coalition meetings, brainstorm and recruit presenters, and guide the direction of the Coalition's work.

CREATING

WELCOMING COMMUNITIES

FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR

This Committee is focusing on ways to make the communities of Franklin County and the North Quabbin more welcoming and safe for current POC residents, future POC residents, as well as visitors. There have been numerous incidents in our community of POC not feeling welcome in public spaces, including recreation spaces such a swimming and hiking areas, as well as at meetings of our local town governments. In order to change this, our first action as a committee has been to connect our municipal leaders to anti-racist trainings through the Franklin Regional Council of Governments. Municipal leaders are often the first point of contact for new residents in our community, and they serve to create many policies that affect community members. They also serve as leaders in our communities, influencing the tone and culture of our towns. We are continuing to advocate for the leaders in our municipalities to take advantage of these trainings, and address both the structural and interpersonal racism in our communities!

ACCOUNTABILITY FOR

RACIAL JUSTICE

The Accountability for Racial Justice Committee is focused on creating strategies to undo the racist ways in which a range of systems function in Franklin County and the North Quabbin. The committee began with a focus on law enforcement: we researched the strategies of other activists and organizers, both in our local communities and across the nation, to see what has been effective in creating change in law enforcement systems. Based on what we learned, we decided to work more broadly on issues of accountability to racial justice in public life. We are now in the process of brainstorming strategic actions to address a range of issues in our own community.

Educational Resources

Our Coalition is powered by a critical analysis of racism, and we have collected the key resources we used to get educated!

Almost twenty-seven years ago, NELCWIT was a lifesaver for me and my three kids, and none of us have forgotten. I'm just sharing this with you to let you know what a huge impact the courageous and dedicated women of NELCWIT, and the vital, top-notch services they provide, have had across time. I can't, and wouldn't want to, imagine my life without your grace and wisdom.
