Resources and services for survivors of female genital mutilation

Did You Know...

that there are hundreds of immigrant women in western Massachusetts who are survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM)?

Sometimes called female circumcision or excision, FGM is a common practice in many African, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries in both Muslim and Christian areas.

The World Health Organization estimates that about 130 million girls and women in 28 countries undergo some form of female circumcision.

In this procedure, young girls' genital parts are removed surgically. Usually performed without any kind of anesthetic, the practice often results in permanent health damage, post-traumatic stress disorder, and childbirth mortality. Many girls die from infections resulting from incision, which is often performed in unsanitary conditions.

Many families apparently believe FGM is an essential part of initiation into adulthood and the only way to ensure their daughter is seen as "pure" and desirable by potential husbands.

Islamic scholars say it has no justification in the Koran, and several have recently spoken out against the practice.

Are You A Survivor of Female Genital Mutilation?

  • Are you experiencing health problems now or have you in the past?

  • Are you experiencing emotional difficulties now or have you in the past?

  • Have you wished you had a place to talk about how you feel, whether it's good or bad?

If so, you are not alone.

Come and Join Us...

in this great new program. We have locations in Greenfield, Amherst, and Springfield that serve all women in Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties.

  • Meet other women who have also experienced FGM.

  • Break the Silence by gathering together and sharing your experiences in a safe, comfortable atmosphere.

  • Learn to break the cycle and protect our daughters' future. Keep them safe, healthy, and happy.

  • One-on-one counseling is also available if you would prefer.

  • Learn about respectful, caring doctors and midwives in your area who know about FGM and can treat the problems that women and girls face as a result.

BREAKING THE SILENCE

We provide a "Safe Haven" in which women and girls can talk about their experiences without facing any pressure or judgment. Breaking The Silence is open to all women who have had this procedure and their allies.  Supportive husbands, friends, and family members are welcome to come, participate, and learn.  We do not criticize any religion or culture. Our purpose is to help women and girls to feel better about themselves and find the medical resources they need.

There is no cost to you for these services.
